"An Anthropology of Images," finally published (April 2018)

My book, An Anthropology of Images -『イメージの人類学』- has been published this month (by Serica Shobo on 16 April 2018, in Japanese). The objective of this book is to reinvent theoretical framework of "sociocultural" anthropology in quite an unorthodox -I admit it- but coherent way, and to make a broad survey, from this perspective, of anthropology's past (during the 20th century), its present (since 1990s) and its future possibilities... ... in which Tomoko Niwa and I contributed some chapters: Tomoko Niwa and Tadashi Yanai, "Flowers' life: Notes and reflections on an art-anthropology exhibition" (chap. 6) and Tadashi Yanai and Arnd Schneider, "Theories in images: Tadashi Yanai in conversation with Arnd Schneider" (chap. 7). This is a fruit of the collaboration we (Tomoko Niwa, Irina Grigore, Rieko Tanaka, Keiji Ideta and me)  realized with Arnd Schneider in 2014. For further information about the book, please find it here.

Dissertations page created (in Japanese)

posted Feb 9, 2015, 9:27 PM by Tadashi YANAI

Last December Satomi Ryuju defended his PhD dissertation with distinction ("Our Life That Can Be Otherwise: An Ethnography of the Present-day Maritime Dwelling among the Asi or Lau in North Malaita, Solomon Islands"). So I have thought it timely to create a new page on dissertations (in Japanese), in which you find my reports on the theses (those of Satomi and of Kiyomi Doi, "Life-in-between: An ethnographic study of traveling on foot to Santiago de Compostela", defended in December 2013). Unfortunately the page is only in Japanese.

Recently we have had the honor and joy of being with Arnd Schneider (University of Oslo) who has visited our labo (he gave also an open lecture at a meeting of the Contemporary Anthropology Workshop). Discussions with him about the relationship of art and anthropology have been very valuable for us. By the way I have updated several pages in "Fragments" part.

"Ciné-Anthropology" book

posted May 16, 2014, 6:46 AM by Tadashi YANAI   [ updated Jun 21, 2014, 12:42 AM ]

  • Ciné-Anthropology: For A New Anthropological Practice (Serica Shobo, 2014, in Japanese), which I edited with Seiji Murao and Masatoshi Kubo, is expected to be available from May 21, 2014 on (including at Japanese online bookstores).
  • I have contributed three chapters (below), five short texts and the organization of the book.
-"Introduction: From Anthropology to Ciné-Anthropology"
The inventions of Jean Rouch: ciné-anthropology of 'other-becoming' "
-"Jean Rouch the cinéaste: His fiction films and their relationship with the Nouvelle Vague", written with Aya Ogawara.
  • Initially I was only planning to translate some of Rouch's texts into Japanese for this book, but I ended up writing two substantial chapters (one with Ogawara) covering Rouch's entire work, from his initial ethnographic films in Niger through the Nouvelle Vague films up to Dionysos and the films of the later years. I have also written the Introduction of the book, imagining a new kind of anthropological practice implied by the immense work of the ciné-anthropologist Rouch, from whom anthropology has learned so little.

  • The book has a coupon for the accompanying DVD of ethnographic films (by Y. Omori, S. Murao, K. Minamide, I. Shimizu and M. Nakamura).

This exhibition, curated by Tomoko Niwa in collaboration with the artist Nabo Shimonaka, is coming to Setagaya, Tokyo (from February 28 to March 16). First exhibited at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (information here) but newly arranged for Setagaya exhibition with additional ideas, it reflects her extended ethnographic fieldwork in China as well as her innovative and continuing research in the crossing zone of anthropology and art.
